EU questions we hear a lot

What EU regulations do I need to comply with?

It depends on what you sell. For most fashion brands the core list is the Textile Labelling Regulation (fibre names on every label), GPSR (product safety and traceability), REACH (restricted chemicals in fabrics, dyes and trims) and the new packaging rules under PPWR. Kidswear, PPE or products with batteries add more. Your audit maps exactly which rules apply to each product.

What’s the biggest compliance mistake companies make in Europe?

Treating the EU as one label and one test report. Fibre labels need the language of every country you sell in, and a supplier saying “compliant” isn’t proof. The gaps we see most are missing translations, untested trims and prints, and no EU contact on the product.

Do I need an EU responsible person?

Usually, yes. Under GPSR every product sold in the EU needs an economic operator based in the EU, such as an importer or authorised representative, with their name and contact details on the product, packaging or accompanying documents. If you sell into the EU from outside it, you’ll need to appoint one.

What happens if I’m not compliant?

Authorities can stop goods at the border, order a withdrawal or recall, and issue fines set by each member state. Marketplaces and retailers can also delist products. The bigger cost is often a delayed launch or a lost retail deal.

When does the Digital Product Passport apply to clothing?

Textiles are one of the first product groups under ESPR. The detailed textile rules are still being written, so exact dates aren’t fixed yet. Organising your product and supplier data now makes the switch much easier.

Can you help with Brexit and UK compliance too?

Yes. Since Brexit the UK has its own rules, such as UK REACH and UK product safety law. We cover the UK and EU together so one range can launch in both.
